Model history

The SA360 Dauphin received only one engine from the company’s engineers. The helicopter turned out high quality and fast. But the engineers decided to equip it with another engine. Aerospatiale was the first to launch a twin-engine helicopter onto the market.


In 1975, the SA-365C Dauphin-2 (F-WVKE) helicopter had two Arriel-1A engines. The power of each engine was 650 horsepower. On January 26, the SA-366 with two Lycoming LTS-101 engines took off. The power of each engine was 680 horsepower. In 1978, the airworthiness certificate for the SA-365C civilian helicopter appeared. Installed on this model engines Arriel-1A1 with a capacity of 667 horsepower. Also at this time produced SA-365C-2 with engines Arriel-1A2. Their power was equal to 670 horsepower each.


The upgraded SA-365N made its first flight on March 31, 1979. On it were installed engines Arriel-1C. Designers increased engine power. Certificates for flights were obtained on April 9 and August 7, 1981.


February 8, 1980 SA-365C made the flight Paris-London-Paris. The helicopter broke the record for flight speed. AS 365N

The designation of the model “SA” (“Sud-Aviation”) was changed to “AS” (“Aerospatiale”). The AS 365N Dauphin 2 helicopter outwardly looked like the rest of the Dauphin helicopter family.
